Graduate Degree with Thesis in Music (M.Mus.) *

The specialization tracks in which it will be possible to write a thesis are:

  1. Music education.
  2. Composition.
  3. Classical performance (including conducting – Orchestra and Choir).
  4. Jazz performance (Requirements for completing a degree in each are attached in Appendix No. 1).

Admission requirements:

  1. Bachelor degree from the Academy of Music and Dance or an equivalent institution in Israel and abroad.
  2. A minimal grade of 90 in the main specialization and an average grade of 90 in all the academic transcripts.
  3. Successful admission exams (auditions) in performance tracks, or a portfolio in the composition track.
  4. An interview with the candidate.

Academic requirements:

Students who did not take the course “Academic reading and writing” as part of their undergraduate studies, are required to take it as part of their supplementary studies. The course does not grant a credit in the master's degree program.

Transition conditions from year 1 to year 2:

  1. In the performance tracks, it is mandatory to perform one recital at the end of the first year.
  2. Completion of the mandatory courses of the first year.
  3. Completion of two methodological courses in research methods.

The student's statement (the text of the statement is attached in Appendix No. 2):

Since the awarding of the degree in the graduate with a thesis M. Mus is conditional on the approval of the Council for Higher Education, each student who is admitted to the program must sign a statement stating that he is aware that the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance is not authorized at this stage to award a master's degree in music (M.Mus.). The degree is subject to the approval of the Higher Education Council. In case the program does not receive accreditation, the student will receive an accredited degree in music without a thesis (M.Mus.) within the framework of the accredited program in music (M.Mus.) held at the institution that has permanent accreditation.

Tuition:

  1. In the first and second years of the degree, the tuition fee is 100% each year (a total of 200%).
  2. Students who will extend their studies to the third year with an individual lesson, will continue to pay 100% tuition.
  3. Students who will accomplish all the recital and portfolio requirements during their first two years, will pay 35% tuition fee for their thesis supervision in the third year, and 10% in the fourth year (up to the thesis submission).

Thesis requirements:

  1. The scope of the thesis will range from 60 to 120 pages.
  2. The language of the thesis is either Hebrew or English.
  3. The subject of the thesis must be approved by the JAMD steering committee of the program.
  4. The proposal must be 800-1000 words long and contain the following sections:
    • A brief description of the subject of the work and the field (performance research, theory, analysis, education, cognition, composition, etc.).
    • Background and a brief review of the existing bibliography.
    • Research objectives and expected results.
    • Description of research methods (methodologies).
    • Conclusions and applications.

  5. The submitted works will be judged by two members of the JAMD steering committee, or a member of the steering committee and another core faculty member (depending on the topic of the thesis) and an external reader in the field of specialization.

 

Deadlines for submissions according to the following milestones:

  • First year in the program:

1.10: A title and brief abstract of the thesis submission.

1.05: An expanded proposal submission.

  • Second year in the program:

31.12: Submission of an introductory chapter that contains a review of the existing literature on the topic and a state of research, a bibliography, a brief description of the work topic and field, research goals and expected results, a description of research methods, conclusions and applications and one of the chapters.

  • Third year in the program: submission of the thesis by June 30 of the year after graduation. In exceptional cases, it will be possible to get an additional extension that will not exceed two years from the end of the studies.

The institution has an Ethics Committee whose members are:

  • Committee coordinator, head of the academic office, Ms. Liraz Avukan-Yitzhaki.

In cases of conflict of interest such as a research proposal or the publication of an article by one of the committee members, Prof. Michael Klinghofer, president of the academy, will take his place in this discussion. The role of the committee is to examine the compliance of thesis proposals and thesis proposals concerning humans, with the accepted standards, including subject approvals and parental approvals in the case of minors. If necessary, the committee will assist with the academy's legal advice.
