Master's Program Admission Requirements

Major subject: Playing an instrument

Bachelor's degree holders in playing an instrument from the Academy or its equivalent - 
1.    Short public recital (around 45 minutes), including at least two complete works.
      The BA final recital, if graded 90 or above, may be considered as the entry recital for theGraduate Program
2.    Grade average of 85 or above
          

Major subject: Singing

Bachelor's degree holders in singing from the Academy or its equivalent - 
1.    Brief public recital (around 25 minutes).
       The BA final recital, if scored 90 or above, may be considered as the entry recital for theGraduate Program
2.    Grade average of 85 or above

                           
Major subject: Composition

Bachelor's degree holders in composition from the Academy or its equivalent - 
1.    Portfolio of works (up to the level of chamber music).
2.    Grade average of 85 or above
 

Major subject: Orchestra Conducting

  1. One of the following academic diplomas:
  1. An undergraduate degree in orchestral conducting from an accredited institution of higher education.
  2. An undergraduate degree in instrumental or vocal performance from an accredited institution of higher education. These applicants must have substantial experience in orchestral conducting.
  1. Applicants who have completed an undergraduate degree in orchestral conducting at the JAMD, and have met the requirements for acceptance to the master’s degree in orchestral conducting for JAMD graduates, will not be required to take an additional entrance exam for the graduate program in orchestral conducting.

The audition will be held in 3 stages:

  1. Music proficiency exam: solfege and aural proficiency, orchestral score reading and keyboard-harmony. In addition, candidates will be required to perform a short program on their major instrument, and will also be required to take an exam in piano proficiency (in case piano is not their major instrument).
  2. Conducting symphonic repertoire with a two-piano ensemble.
  3. Conducting a rehearsal with an orchestral ensemble. The repertoire for this part of the audition will be sent to the candidates at least 2 weeks prior to the audition. 

Successful candidates who have been admitted to the program will be required to take a placement exam in music theory, which will determine if additional courses from the bachelor’s program are required. These courses will not be considered as part of the course requirements for the completion of the master’s degree.

Major subject: Music education

Bachelor's degree holders in music education (B.Ed.Mus.) from the Academy or its equivalent,
with a grade average of 80 or above 

Major subject: Contemporary Improvisation

The Contemporary Improvisation track is open to musicians who have a Bachelor’s degree in Instrumental/Vocal classical performance, Jazz performance, or Oriental Music. Musicians with an undergraduate degree in Composition must prove a level of instrumental proficiency. Submission of a video that includes:

  1. A solo piece (with or without accompaniment) in the style of the undergraduate major.
  2. Un-edited ensemble Improvisation session.
  3. Free style un-edited solo improvisation that includes extended techniques.

Major subject: Jazz Performance

  1. Medium tempo blues (5 choruses)
  2. Uptempo standard (4 choruses)
  3. Ballad standard (2 choruses)
  4. Original Composition

 

Major subject: Composing for the media

  1. Presentation of a portfolio of scores and recordings (at least three works for a large ensemble or orchestra)
  2. Presentation of a first-degree transcript (excluding graduates of the academy)
 

Major subject: Cross-Disciplinary Singing

  1. Bachelor's degree holders in singing from the Academy or its equivalent
  2. An audition including two songs of different styles or Grade average of 90 or above from the bachelor's degree 
  3. Personal Interview
  4. A short paper detailing the motivation and personal vision of the applicant
